About Farmington, Minnesota*
Farmington is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 12,365 at the 2000 census. It is home to the Farmington Tigers, which has been over the years good at football, could use some more attention to sports like track, soccer, and tennis.
At one time Farmington almost became the County seat but is the home for the County Fairgrounds. The most conspicuous employer is the FAA which has the upper midwest safety award winning flight control center located here. You always thought those guys sitting the radars were at the airport..nope, they are here. Also, not on the FAA property, is the homing beacon for the Twin Cities used by automated directional systems.
For many years Farmington's annual celebration was known as Mountain Dew Days due to having the highest per capita consumption of Pepsi's popular drink, Mountain Dew.
GEOGRAPHY
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.5 km˛ (12.5 mi˛), all land. In the state of 10,000+ lakes, Farmington came up short. Several fishing ponds and the Vermillion creek, a State-Protected trout stream.
DEMOGRAPHICS
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,365 people, 4,169 households, and 3,255 families residing in the city. The population density was 380.7/km˛ (986.0/mi˛). There were 4,233 housing units at an average density of 130.3/km˛ (337.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 95.62% Caucasian. 0.74% African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.46% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.88% of the population.
There were 4,169 households out of which 51.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.4% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the city the population was spread out with 34.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 41.5% from 25 to 44, 12.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $61,864, and the median income for a family was $65,380. Males had a median income of $42,796 versus $30,373 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,281. About 1.3% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 9.5% of those age 65 or over.
